Delaware County and the village of Delaware were both founded in 1808.
The name Delaware has a convoluted history. In Ohio, there were a group of Native Americans living here that had originally come from the east coast. They called themselves the Lenape. But, because they lived primarily around a particular river that the English had named Delaware, the Lenape became known as Delawares. The river name Delaware was given in honor of Thomas West, and English nobleman and Virginia's first colonial governor. Thomas West's titled name was Thomas West, 3rd Baron De La Warr. The barony De La Warr, when it became Americanized was shortened to just Delaware. The odd thing is that when the county was formed, it was primarily inhabited by Mingos. The name Mingo was given to an independent group of Iroquois living in Ohio by the Delaware!

You would think that with the name Columbus Zoo it would be located in Columbus, or at least in Franklin County. But that would an incorrect guess. The Columbus Zoo is actually located in Delaware County. Regardless of where it is located, the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is great place to visit and one of the best zoos in the world.
